Walmart Announces Removal of Synthetic Dyes by 2027

Why It Matters

This isn’t an isolated move. Across global markets, consumer preference for natural and simple ingredients continues to grow, while state-level regulations and FDA scrutiny add momentum. Walmart’s decision translates those consumer values into retail action — pushing the entire supply chain toward cleaner formulations.

The transition to natural color is expected to influence thousands of SKUs under brands like Great Value, Marketside, Freshness Guaranteed, and Bettergoods. Suppliers and manufacturers will be under pressure to deliver equivalent color performance using natural color alternatives — from bright reds to stable blues and greens — within a tight two-year window.

A Turning Point for the Industry

The removal of synthetic dyes on this scale marks more than a compliance update — it’s a market inflection point. For decades, synthetic colorants dominated due to cost and stability advantages. But with advancements in natural color extraction and formulation technology, clean-label colors now achieve comparable performance — with stronger consumer trust and brand value.

This reformulation trend will not stop at Walmart. Competing retailers and CPG brands are expected to follow, mirroring past ingredient reformulations such as the removal of trans fats and artificial sweeteners.
