What are GI/GL/II?
The Glycemic Index (GI) is a measure of the impact of available carbohydrates in food on the increase in blood sugar concentration in the human body. It reflects the body's response in terms of blood sugar production after consuming food.
GL (Glycemic Load) is the glycemic load, which combines the glycemic index (GI value) of food with the amount of available carbohydrates consumed during the digestion process to describe the comprehensive effect of food on blood sugar.
The Insulin Index (II) is a measure of the amount of insulin the body produces in response to food intake. When blood sugar rises due to food consumption, the body releases insulin to regulate it. The Insulin Index is a way to calculate the amount of insulin produced by the body in response to food.
What are low-GI foods?
According to the food classification standards in domestic and international standards such as "WS/T 429-2013 Dietary Guidance for Adult Diabetic Patients", "WS/T 652-2019 Method for Determining the Glycemic Index of Foods", and "AS 4694-2007 Glycemic Index of Foods", foods with a glycemic index (GI) of ≤55 are classified as low-GI foods, those with 55 < GI ≤ 70 are classified as medium-GI foods, and those with GI > 70 are classified as high-GI foods.
In addition, foods can also be classified based on their glycemic load (GL). Foods with a GL < 10 are considered low GL foods, those with 10 ≤ GL ≤ 20 are medium GL foods, and those with GL > 20 are high GL foods.
How to test GI/GL/II?
The relevant reference standards include "ISO 26642-2010 FOOD PRODUCTS - DETERMINATION OF THE GLYCAEMIC INDEX (GI) AND RECOMMENDATION FOR FOOD CLASSIFICATION" and "WS/T 652-2019 Method for determination of glycemic index of foods".
